Seems a little unfair Bjorn. Not all English houses are crack ridden housing estates you know. Moreover, you have not photgraphed English houses, but flats. So there.

Well, I think that you have to remember that the ‘continental houses’ ARE equivalent to the ‘english houses’ - the first ones are working class, the second ones are working class too. Because if you would have asked Bjorn to photograph some Berlin flats you would have turned green of envy - simply, the ‘continental houses’ here are the ‘white trash buildings’ of the continents, whether you like it or not, Nick.

The charm of Englishness lies in the realisation that this ‘grey’ & ‘non-aesthetic’ apperance is part of the culture- and that is TRULY charming (at least after a few years).

Truely charming, and crack (both drug and concrete) ridden. Also, I don’t want a grey and non-aesthetic built environment. I want an exciting and interesting one that is safe and enjoyable to be in. I don’t see you heading off to Burgess park or Aylsebury for any picnics. I’m sure, just like m,e you’d rather go to Hyde Park or somewhere where the aesthetic is very much not grey, (and the people coke ridden instead!)

But my daily surroundings are still New Cross! & when I walk to Greenwich park for my picnic, I still walk through Deptford!

(......and i’ll still rather live in Deptford than Greenwich, because I just can’t get enough of that colour grey!!!!)

Whoa!  Why doesn’t anybody comment in this impassioned way on my stuff?  (I’m jealous).

In fact I did have a question for you Bjorn: if for the sake of the argument we accept that you are right about the housing, what is the conclusion you draw from it?

Why do things work in the continent (if they do) and why don’t they work in London?

What’s the take home lesson?  Is it politics, economics, histrionics, megatronics or what?

Thanks.

One more question, this one for James Wilson.

What exactly is a hairy dyke biscuit?

Is there any connection with Mississippi Mud Pie? (Dyke = levee = New Orleans?).

Or is it the opposite of a Gari-baldy biscuit?
