Psychotherapy & Design

I am interested in the theory of status anxiety, the paradox of choice and the philosophy of Gestalt. Through…

There are several ways this project could spin out. I would welcome input from anyone out there who has an interest / expertise in associated disciplines in order to reel in my ideas.

I realise the scope is very broad so what follows is a possible framework for the project:

Who is involved?
Individuals who lead or aspire to lead western lifestyles but, despite increased levels of wealth and convenience, they are no colser to finding happiness… whatever that is.

I welcome input from philosophers, therapists, other designers, artists or anyone else who recognises this angst.

What will I do?

Design objects to build on the progress made in initial counselling sessions.

How will I do it?

From what I can see, there seems to be a definite shift in contemporary psychotherapy, away from dwelling on the underlying causes of problems and instead focusing on solution-oriented ‘tools’ and techniques to bring about positive change.

How will this manifest into a design project?

A simple example would be to design a cabinet to house the TV - causing the user to reflect on the impact TV has on their lives.

How is this relevant?

Less TV = less CO2 emmissions + increased happiness.

Where & when?

One scenario is that clients will be referred (via their therapists) and a bespoke package / kit will be created to apply to their everyday lifestyle.

Why

If we’re not happy with ourselves, how can we be expected to care for others. How can we feel capable of changing our world if we can’t change ourselves? Changing time, continual commitment and support. Such support must continue beyond the counselling sessions. The power of design is that it is integral to our senses, habits, and everyday life and can continue to enable sustained development.

Hi Mike

I would like to ask you what field your expertise is in?  Psychiatry, psychotherapy??

Strangely enough my own TV is already housed in a cabinet!

Are the therapists referring clients to yourself or to a team?  How would you propose offering support beyond the counselling session and where would the funding come from?

yours sincerely
