Landscape portraiture and fun with models.

Whilst ‘tidying’ my room (moving things around rediscovering lost property) I found a box of farmers™ models.

It quickly descended into creating landscape scenes with portraiture techniques.

Making rolling hillsides from polycotton sheets with injection moulded sheep.

So dig out your old toys unmake your bed and get shooting

Quite frankly these are stunning, wonderful pieces. I particularly appreciate the first and the third pictures as, with a little willing suspension of disbelief(overlooking mould lines), they can be taken to be well executed rural landscapes. The harsh shadows lend the pictures a sense of depth to the foreground subjects and the texture of the sheets provides gritty and believable backgrounds.

These pictures reminded me of my favourite childhood poem by Robert Louis Stevenson. Its a shame I can’t post the illustration with the poem… but Jo’s pictures do the same job.

THE LAND OF COUNTERPLANE

When I was sick & lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all the toys beside me lay
To keep me happy all the day.

And sometimes for an hour or so
I watched my leaden soldiers go,
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bed-clothes, through the hills;

And sometimes sent my ships in fleets
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about.

I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterplane.
