The House of Bernanda Alba: Representing women in theatre

The central character in Lorca’s play is Bernanda. She causes her daugther to commit suicide, but does not express any sign of sorrow or regret. Why is it so? Is the play only reflecting the way the Catholic Spanish society was towards women at that time, or is it the style of the playwright? The way Bernanda is portrayed is compared to how Ibsens portrays women.
